Learning Beyond the Classroom

Personal Development at LDSM extends far beyond the classroom. We believe children develop confidence, independence, curiosity and important life skills by having opportunities to experience, explore and take part in the world around them.

Throughout their time at LDSM, pupils take part in real projects, trips and visits, outdoor learning, sporting and cultural experiences, residentials and opportunities to learn directly from experts and visitors who bring their knowledge and experiences into school.

These opportunities allow children to put their learning into practice, discover new interests and talents, work with different people and develop skills and experiences that they will carry with them beyond LDSM.

Sport & Competition

Pupils have opportunities to take part in a wide range of sporting experiences, from representing LDSM in fixtures and tournaments to whole-year-group opportunities. We want children of different abilities and experiences to have the opportunity to participate, compete and enjoy sport.

Forest School & Outdoor Learning

Our Forest School and outdoor learning provide opportunities for children to develop independence, resilience, teamwork and problem-solving while developing their appreciation and understanding of the natural world.

Trips, Visits & Real Experiences

We believe some of the most memorable learning happens through experience. Trips, visits, residentials and real projects allow pupils to take their learning beyond the classroom, experience new places and develop confidence and independence. We regularly invite people with specialist knowledge, skills and real-life experience into LDSM. These opportunities allow pupils to ask questions, learn directly from experts and broaden their understanding of different careers, experiences and the wider world.

Music, Creativity & Performance

Pupils have opportunities to express themselves and develop their talents through music, choir, performance and creative experiences, both within school and as part of our wider community.

Community, Social Action & Our Wider World

We want pupils to understand that they can make a difference. Through projects such as Groundforce Day, charitable activities and work within our local community, children have opportunities to take responsibility and contribute positively to the world around them.

Our pupils are encouraged to look beyond their immediate community and develop their understanding of the wider world. Our developing relationship with the Pearl of Africa Foundation School grew from the work of our 2025–26 Pupil Parliament, who wanted to establish a meaningful link with a school abroad. This relationship will continue to develop, giving pupils opportunities to learn about one another's lives, communities and experiences.
